Being an Au Pair gives you the chance to live abroad and broaden your horizons. However, this opportunity also comes with some challenges. Being away from friends and family, problems understanding the language and adapting to a new culture can of course lead to nostalgic feelings.
For this reason, we have put together some recommendations to help you avoid homesickness.
Discover your new country
Get ready to discover the best places around your city, town or region. Buy a local guide to check out museums, monuments and restaurants and enjoy the popular places in your area.
You can also plan weekend or day trips with friends or acquaintances. Travelling to nearby cities or spending time with nature in the host country will make you realize how much you have come.
Have a good time with your family
As an Au Pair you are a temporary member of the family. It is very nice to spend some quality time together. Join your hosts for dinner or let them show you their favourite places in the neighbourhood. Your family will be there to help you adjust and feel at home. Spending time with them will also bring you closer to the kids and create a special bond with the family.
Attend a language class
The language course will not only improve your language skills, but also put you in contact with new people. Your classmates are probably new to the country, which means they might also understand how you feel.
Meet new people
Join an international group, join a club, meet other Au Pairs or just talk to the people you meet when you are at the playground with the kids or while you are waiting for them at the school entrance. Your new friends will be there for you when you are feeling down and of course they will be there when the good times come. The best thing is that you can meet friends from different countries who will enrich your perspective.
Plan your time!
Is there a place nearby that you would like to visit? Then do it as soon as possible! While you are abroad, it is normal to say “I have all year to go” until all of a sudden it’s over. Make the most of your stay abroad and take advantage of this unique opportunity.
