The ideal body weight is a relatively vague concept because it has no precise definition.
From a purely medical point of view, the ideal weight of an individual is the one for which the risks induced by its weight (hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, …) are minimal. This ideal weight does not correspond to a precise weight, but rather to a range of weight around an average weight that we will call “theoretical ideal body weight”. This “theoretical ideal body weight” varies from one individual to another depending on his or her height, sex, age, morphology, muscularity and many other factors.

It is possible to determine a “theoretical ideal body weight” for a given population, through statistical studies carried out on a representative sample of this population. This “theoretical ideal weight” corresponds then to the average weight of this population, it does not really have a value for a different population (for example the theoretical ideal body weight of an Asian type population is not the same as that of an Anglo-Saxon type population).

In the absence of statistical studies, many mathematical formulas have been developed to try to determine the “theoretical ideal body weight” of an individual according to various parameters, the main one being his height. These formulas give results that can vary greatly from one to another and are only useful as an indication.
